The Truth About Rediscovering Yourself in Midlife
Quick rewind to grade school gym class…
There I was, waiting in line before a thick, scratchy rope hanging from the ceiling — aka my impending doom. As my classmates climbed like playful monkeys, fearless and fast, I was two seconds from faking a stomachache.
But then came my turn. I grabbed the rope, jumped… and… nothing. Okay, maybe I moved an inch or two — three tops, at sloth-like speed. I looked around only to see my gym teacher give me that half-pity, half-pep-talk look. And in that moment, I gave up on two things: the rope… and, more quietly, the belief that I was strong.
✦ The Most Exhausting Ripple Effect of All
That tiny moment stuck with me for decades, silently declaring, I’m not athletic. I’m not strong. That’s just not who I am.
The rope became more than a gym class memory. It became a subtle, sneaky story — the kind that whispers, “You’re not enough.”
Of course, you, like me, have those moments too.
Some are dramatic. Others are so small you almost miss them. But no matter how they show up, they leave their mark. They plant doubt.
Before you know it, you’re not just doubting your strength in gym class — you’re doubting your voice in conversations, your desires in relationships, and your worth in the world.
You start believing the problem isn’t what you do — it’s who you are.
Too loud, too quiet, too dramatic, too sensitive. Not strong enough, smart enough, thin enough, fit enough, grateful enough.
So, little by little, you adjust yourself — to make that conversation, that relationship, or life itself work. You dim your light so others could shine — or at least feel more comfortable.
You shape-shift.
You become who others expect.
You play it safe.
The story of your life becomes muddied as who you think you should be and how you show up in the world because of those 'shoulds' vs. who you truly are deep inside, creates a potent cocktail of limiting beliefs and mixed emotions, such as shame, blame, guilt, confusion, and fault, that only serve to increase self-doubt, widening the distance between your daily self and your authentic self. And it's exhausting.
It makes so much sense that, by the time you reach midlife, being yourself — truly, freely, unapologetically yourself — becomes… well, harder.

✦ The Struggle of Being Authentic
What feels fun — your quirky traits, personal preferences, and bold opinions — now feels like it’s not worth the risk. So you stop sharing. Stop asking. Stop making your favorite meal because “no one else likes it.”
It just seems easier to let go than hold on.
As illogical as it may sound, sometimes the hardest person to be is you — authentic, raw, honest, fully carefree, YOU. Yet, when instead of being yourself, you’re trying to be what you think other people want you to be, showing up to life can feel impossible, uncomfortable, and even painful.
Over time, it adds up — until one day, you're wondering, "Who am I now? And how the hey do I get back to a version of me I actually like being?"
✦ What If Joy Isn't About Fixing Yourself — But Rediscovering Yourself?
Sometimes the path to joy isn't about striving to be more, do more, or have more. It’s about returning to the version of you that’s already here, already enough, and then expanding from that place of worthiness.
What would happen IF, instead of focusing on what you think you're not — good enough, smart enough, young enough — you focus on what you already are and what you truly love – the unique gifts, opinions, and preferences that make you YOU?
Imagine loving yourself into transformation — instead of criticizing yourself into change.
Because the moment you reconnect with the full, unapologetic you, the pressure you've been feeling begins to ease up.
Authenticity draws joy in.
Being you = happiness.

✦ Remember: You’re Already Enough!
You don't have to be more perfect to feel more joy. You don't have to earn your worth — or apologize for your needs and desires. And you definitely don't have to keep shrinking just to feel safe.
Instead, you can choose to remember:
✧ You're already enough – just as you are at this very moment. Your existence is a beautiful testament to the strength and uniqueness that only you can bring to this world.
✧ You deserve a brilliant life that fills your heart with joy, where laughter dances through your days and happiness wraps around you like a warm embrace. To know that you are worthy of every dream, every passion, and every moment of authentic bliss.
✧ You possess incredible power within you, especially when it comes to building unwavering trust in yourself. Trust that you are capable of forging your own path, filled with possibilities and rich with experiences that resonate with your soul.
You can welcome the journey ahead and embrace yourself in this season of life, knowing that every step you take is a celebration of the incredible, most authentic you you're becoming.
The wisdom you seek is already within you in those tiny moments that spark curiosity, hope, and excitement. It's time to accept that regardless of what anyone else thinks, you know what lights you up, what brings you joy, and what's worth valuing in your own life.
So, let your inner wisdom wash over you like a gentle tide, filling you with warmth and hope. You're cherished, loved, and fully worthy of a life that shines with the brilliance of your spirit. So take a deep breath, believe in yourself, and swap one of those old, limiting, not-enough beliefs for something more true and more YOU.
And yes — that includes rewriting old stories like, “I’m not strong enough.”
How do I know? Because at 52 years of age, I climbed 4,000 feet of Mt. Washington on a bicycle — up the steepest segment in the United States (#23 in the world!).
And, at first, it may seem sad that I placed 472nd out of 501 racers. 😬
But only four women in my age group even attempted it.
And I was one of them. 🥰
